There went the\u00a0last year and a half or so in Barbados! Mostly *poof-itty* fast anyway, except for those e-looooooongated stretches of time when no visitors were scheduled on the calendar and no trips off island were in the works and I started to feel a bit like Bubbles, the yellow Tang fish from the dentists office fish tank in Finding Nemo who became abnormally excited whenever the little treasure chest in the tank opened and let loose a stream of bubbles &#8211;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Gill: Fish aren&#8217;t meant to be in a box, kid. It does things to ya.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/s7IYR_rELyE\">http:\/\/youtu.be\/s7IYR_rELyE<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It didn&#8217;t quite get to the talking-to-a-volleyball stage, but that&#8217;s only because the purple-furred muppet that lives on my left hand said not to. Or at least that&#8217;s what I think it said. Or what I thought to make it say. Or what I actually said in a high, all upper register voice that\u00a0my purple friend&#8217;s mouth moved to as I spoke. But whatever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a id=\"photoset_link_64052481500_3\" href=\"http:\/\/37.media.tumblr.com\/92109adf7d4a6f2ce22327f3100b8a1a\/tumblr_muo01mAXvC1s5gtj2o4_250.gif\" data-photoset-index=\"3\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/37.media.tumblr.com\/92109adf7d4a6f2ce22327f3100b8a1a\/tumblr_muo01mAXvC1s5gtj2o4_250.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"245\" height=\"135\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.animateit.net\/details.php?image_id=6151\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Coo Coo Clock\" src=\"http:\/\/www.animateit.net\/data\/media\/nov2011\/KOOKOO.gif\" alt=\"Coo Coo Clock\" width=\"99\" height=\"107\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the weeks prior to relocating anywhere, we did as most embarking on a new adventure might do, scouring the internet for information and stories about where we were headed. We watched all of the Barbados Tourism Board videos (they\u2019re quite good actually!) and tried to imagine the new scenery and how the days might unfold in a tropical paradise.\u00a0\u00a0 <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.millan.net\/minimations\/smileys\/summerdaysmile1.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We read countless expat stories from around the world trying to glean useful information from others experiences through the process and also read with interest what are considered the 5 stages of being an expat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><em>1. Honeymoon Stage: At first stage everything in new surroundings is profoundly exciting and interesting. a great adventure. Just like a honeymoon, the bliss of beginning a new life can be rose-colored, happy, and hopeful for most expatriates. <\/em><\/span>(True.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><em>2. Culture Shock: Six to eight weeks after the move is the culture shock stage. It\u2019s as if you are a child again. It\u2019s typical at this stage to feel that something is not right and homesickness sets in. <\/em><\/span>(Yup.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><em>3. Initial Adjustment Stage:\u00a0Here the expat starts\u00a0gaining self reliance and being able to connect with local people in social and business situations. <\/em><\/span>(Something like that.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><em>4. Mental Isolation: The initial adjustment stage is followed by another wave of integration ups and downs. During this stage the thought, \u201cMaybe the people back home are forgetting about me,\u201d comes into play.<\/em><\/span> (As does\u00a0the furry purple friend&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><em>5. Acceptance and Integration: : One finally stops trying to change the host culture or\u00a0 comparing it\u00a0to the home country and\u00a0develops new strategies for everyday life. <\/em><\/span>(An appreciation forms for the what IS here rather than the what isn&#8217;t)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Despite such research done in advance of such a move, the imagination makes it easy to sculpt a whole Versailles worthy mental garden of pathways, arches and fancy topiary populated by statues in frozen diorama-like \u00a0postures living this new (and wholly imaginary) life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tulipsbloom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/20121013IMG_7588.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-258\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tulipsbloom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/20121013IMG_7588.jpg\" alt=\"20121013IMG_7588\" width=\"590\" height=\"355\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tulipsbloom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/20121013IMG_7588.jpg 737w, https:\/\/www.tulipsbloom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/20121013IMG_7588-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That being said, your new experiences help you to\u00a0clumsily chip noses, appendages or whole heads\u00a0off the unrealistic statues created and come to peace with whatever form remains.\u00a0 We had 20 visitors to the island in our time here (You&#8217;re welcome Barbados Tourism Board) and now that our departure is imminent, reflection on the time spent here comes to the fore and you wonder if you did the place and yourself justice by taking it all (or enough of it) in. A few thoughts then on the experience &#8211;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Will miss &#8211;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0Our amazing beach. Living right across the street from this gorgeous beach with beautiful sky above and beautiful views from every other angle above and below the waters surface<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tulipsbloom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/3F650AA7-B853-4C63-B07C-F7849FB0613F.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-269\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tulipsbloom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/3F650AA7-B853-4C63-B07C-F7849FB0613F-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"3F650AA7-B853-4C63-B07C-F7849FB0613F\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tulipsbloom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/3F650AA7-B853-4C63-B07C-F7849FB0613F-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/www.tulipsbloom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/3F650AA7-B853-4C63-B07C-F7849FB0613F-765x1024.jpg 765w, https:\/\/www.tulipsbloom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/3F650AA7-B853-4C63-B07C-F7849FB0613F-900x1204.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.tulipsbloom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/3F650AA7-B853-4C63-B07C-F7849FB0613F.jpg 1530w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Swimming in that mix of cyan, cerulean and\u00a0Persian\u00a0blue water. The swimming is much more than just strokes through clear water&#8230;It&#8217;s more like swimming but\u00a0with snorkeling benefits <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tulipsbloom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/0BF8D5DD-3FDA-484A-8E8D-E96FF65D220D.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-266\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tulipsbloom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/0BF8D5DD-3FDA-484A-8E8D-E96FF65D220D-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"0BF8D5DD-3FDA-484A-8E8D-E96FF65D220D\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tulipsbloom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/0BF8D5DD-3FDA-484A-8E8D-E96FF65D220D-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.tulipsbloom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/0BF8D5DD-3FDA-484A-8E8D-E96FF65D220D-144x144.jpg 144w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The easy friendliness and greetings from pretty much everyone <\/span>you encounter<\/li>\n<li>Our residence here, which for us had the best location,was open and well lit, perfectly sized, had the amazing rooftop pool and cooling breezes that came down the hill from the back and breezed through to the front towards the ocean. Loved it!<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0Mullins Beach Bar &#8211;\u00a0 Positioned right on the beach and open to take in the views and breeze. Every single one. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tulipsbloom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/0FD539D4-9B26-4683-99DA-BD7D5D05EC35.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-276\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tulipsbloom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/0FD539D4-9B26-4683-99DA-BD7D5D05EC35-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"0FD539D4-9B26-4683-99DA-BD7D5D05EC35\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tulipsbloom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/0FD539D4-9B26-4683-99DA-BD7D5D05EC35-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.tulipsbloom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/0FD539D4-9B26-4683-99DA-BD7D5D05EC35-144x144.jpg 144w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0The quiet and rugged beauty of the island\u2019s East Coast.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0The occasional Cuban cigar.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0The wild and sometimes incredibly brief rainstorms<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0Driving on the left-hand side of the road in our somewhat rare on-island left-hand drive car<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Won\u2019t miss &#8211;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sultriness\u00a0and the malaise and heat rashes it induces<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The uncertainty of grocery shopping where sometimes garlic or tomatoes or bread, etc. will disappear from shelves for days on end, though this did help me get over a bad case of Northern California food snobbery and enabled me to embrace what is, such as iceberg lettuce and its friends.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The buses overpopulating the narrow roads, some crawling along at 10mph in hopes of picking up fares and then others speeding along at far too fast a speed for these roads and careening around corners on two wheels<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The wine selection which is limited and expensive<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Trying to park in Holetown in season<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Trying to park in Holetown in off season<\/span><\/li>\n<li>To be honest, the very name Holetown<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Driving on the left-hand side of the road in our first car, a right-hand drive<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The cost of some things, i.e. Berries, tp, ice cream<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Takeaways &#8211;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Coconut milk in coffee &amp; tea is fantastic<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One can feel themselves to be a\u00a0powerful dolphin-like creature when able to swim with fins in gorgeous uncrowded waters<\/span><\/li>\n<li>People arriving to the tropics from cold, dark places and\u00a0that haven&#8217;t seen the sun for a while should really be more careful.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It&#8217;s been great. It&#8217;s been lonely. I&#8217;ve loved it and I&#8217;ve pined for home.
