These individuals usually need to have at least 3 months of continuous clean time. The House Manager is there to provide accountability to the other residents. The first Oxford House was started in 1975 in Silver Springs MD by a group of recovering alcoholics/addicts who were living in a halfway house that was closing down. Worried that they would have to leave and not have a safe place to go, they decided to rent a house together and hold each other accountable to staying sober. Within six months they had enough money saved to open a second house, to meet the need for more beds.

Having houses in good neighborhoods with a safe environment for recovery to flourish may be the single most important reason for the Oxford House success. Boraas, supra, 416 U.S. at 9, 94 S. 2d at 804, it must be careful not to exclude groups of people based on their personal characteristics.

What is Oxford House?

Oxford House, which began in 1975, is different from the traditional recovery home model. Oxford Houses are self-run and residents can stay as long as they pay their weekly rent, follow the house rules, and remain abstinent from drugs and alcohol. Over 25,000 people have lived in these homes over the past year, making them the largest network of residential recovery self-help homes in the country.

All of a sober house’s residents are expected to pursue better health and a substance-free life.

Oxford Houses are meant to be a safe transition to regular life, and this transition is vital to anyone whose ability to not use or drink often depends on simply having someone to keep a close eye on them.

If the actions of their members may be imputed to the defendants when they vote to evict another member, then their counseling-like actions must be imputed as well.

He held that Audubon also violated section 3617 of that act by taking actions to “coerce, intimidate, threaten, or interfere” with the Oxford House residents. The judge imposed a $10,000 fine and injunctive relief against the Borough’s interference with the residents of Oxford House based on the Federal Fair Housing Act’s provision for protection of “handicapped” recovering substance abusers. In 2007, the Oxford House organization received about $1.6 million in grants from state and local governments to pay outreach workers to develop and maintain networks of individual Oxford Houses in nine States and the District of Columbia. Only 6% of these costs were for general and administrative costs of Oxford House, Inc.

Sober Living Home & Oxford House Rules

In the 1980’s exclusion was based on income and distribution of wealth. Based on this concern alone, a remand to the Chancery Division is required. As discussed next, however, the record before us requires reversal of the order for injunctive relief based on (1) the unconstitutionality of the ordinance’s definition of family and (2) the potential violation of the Federal Fair Housing Act.

What is the difference?!?! – Recovery Residence, Sober Living, Oxford House

Most homes have household meetings nightly, and residents often attend treatment, support group meetings or other wellness activities together. Some sober living homes have exercise equipment, fitness areas, recreational space, pools and cookout areas. The homes may also be near an outpatient treatment center or https://ecosoberhouse.com/ on the campus of residential rehab facility. Most residents at sober living homes have a private or semiprivate room. The homes usually include a kitchen, common areas and laundry accommodations.
